For a number of years College Hill residents have been concerned about the condition and safety of Springdale Park, a small pocket park at the corner of Spring Garden Street and Springdale Court. In 2006 the neighborhood approached the Parks and Recreation Department about the idea of renovating the park. Parks and Recreation staff worked with the neighborhood over a two-year period to develop a renovation plan for the park. Funding would come from a Neighborhood Small Projects grant and Municipal Service District funds.
A neighborhood committee headed by Lyddan Pawlowski worked closely with staff from the Parks and Recreation Department to make sure the plan addressed the concerns of the community but at the same time respected the special character of this historic park. The neighborhood committee was led by Llyddan Pawlowski, a Carr Street resident. The design concept was finalized and approved by the neighborhood in mid 2007. The Historic Preservation Commission approved a concept plan for the park at a public hearing in May of 2007. Construction drawings were prepared by Moser Mayer Pheonix in 2008 and approved by the Historic Preservation Commission. Work is scheduled to begin in late winter 2009.

McIver Street in College Hill may be losing at least one of its historic homes; part of a broader plan by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) to destroy an entire street-face within the National Register-designated neighborhood.
Designated by City Council as Greensboro’s first historic district in 1980, and recognized by the United States Park Service as a National Register Historic District in 1993, College Hill is among the Gate City’s most historic neighborhoods. Read More
