1st Neighborhood Summit a Success!

Over 60 people came together on January 27th to talk about the future of College Hill.  The evening was kicked off by At Large City Councilman Robbie Perkins who applauded the neighborhood for embarking on a neighborhood planning process.  He encouraged everyone to put all ideas on the table and work together to keep improving Greensboro’s first local historic district.

Representatives from Greensboro College and UNCG joined residents, homeowners, landlords, business owners and students in lively discussions about housing, public safety and crime, and neighborhood development issues.  Summaries of those discussions will be posted on this web site in a few days.

If you couldn’t be at the first summit, please take a few minutes to take the on-line survey.  You can down load the handouts on the documents section of this site. Click here for images!

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

College Hill’s unique location between downtown Greensboro and Greensboro College on the east and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on the west, contributes to the energy brought by the diversity of its residents, including students, faculty families and seniors.   It is a community rich in history and identity; with amenities of convenience, architectural charm, human scale, and a sense of character.

Dating back to the early nineteenth century, College Hill is Greensboro’s oldest community and first historic district, designated in 1980.  In recent years, the community has overcome hard times that nearly destroyed its rich architectural heritage. Once, this neighborhood was dominated by absentee-owned apartment houses in substandard condition, and grand old Victorian homes were demolished for commercial development. This was before the area was identified by its community members and the City’s Department of Housing and Community Development as needing assistance and neighborhood revitalization in 1978. Since then College Hill residents and the College Hill Neighborhood Association have taken up the banner of historic preservation neighborhood planning.
